About

The ON::VIEW Artist Residency, hosted by ARTS Southeast and Sulfur Studios, is an innovative program situated in Savannah’s vibrant Starland District, offering artists a distinctive platform to explore and expand their creative practice. Established in 2018, the residency provides a free, high-visibility studio space for artists to work on new projects, continue existing work, or conduct research. Unique for its location, the residency features studio space with large windows facing Bull Street, the district's main thoroughfare, making the artists' creative process accessible to the community and allowing for continuous public engagement. This residency stands out not only for its commitment to artistic exploration but also for its inclusion of the 5th Dimension Apartment, introduced in 2022 to offer free housing for out-of-town artists. This addition underscores the program's goal to attract a wide array of creatives from around the globe, further establishing Savannah as a key destination for the arts. The apartment comes with a full kitchen, bath, and a private garden, providing a comfortable and inspiring environment for the residents. The ON::VIEW Residency supports a wide range of artistic media and encourages interaction with the local community through workshops, performances, public art projects, and artist talks. It's designed to foster creative exchanges and the sharing of ideas, enriching both the artists’ experience and the cultural life of Savannah.

Benefits: this residency provided a very encouraging and safe space to work, and was supported by a solid group of individuals that I could count on for conversation, critique, and guidance as I navigated my month in Savannah. Challenges: I was able to bring my vehicle with me so I was constantly visiting many of the city’s institutions. But I can imagine without a car you may have had a slightly more limited experience. However, previous residents informed me that they were able to carpool with some of the On::View staff and colleagues. Practical advice: Take advantage of & attend everything you can. There is a wealth of creative knowledge and experience in Savannah’s art community. Cost vs Gains: I would encourage anyone to source their materials beforehand if possible. They do provide a small stipend at a local reuse art supply store (1 block away) but outside of that you may be limited without visiting the Blick by SCAD. Materials were the largest cost for me, as you are provided with living and grocery is not inordinately expensive. Overall, I gained so much from the time and space to work, I highly recommend it to any artist.

The location in Savannah, GA was very nice, it’s a unique town that was fun to experience for an extended time. Small, quiet apartment with minimal furnishings and kitchen supplies made for a comfortable stay. The people who run the program are hands-off and leave you to work on your project with minimal over sight. Be prepared as the title suggests, the studio Space is very much in full display for outside passing crowds. It is a tight space with little to no access to tools and other supplies. Bring most anything you need for your work. There are art supply stores down the street.

The residency was a great experience for me, and I'd love to do it again! I could have used some more support during the residency to get community involvement, and/or more promotion, or participated in the residency for 2-3 months, to really allow the project to gain momentum. One month goes by really quickly! It's a great residency program, plan ahead to make sure you get the most out of your time there and in Savannah. If you can get in and attend the First Friday event before you start, it will help you get acclimated and meet people, and many artists working in the studios. Having a place to stay, a place to work, and the support of the residency is fantastic - I've recommended this residency to several artists friends.

I really loved my time there! Emily and Jon were super pleasant to work with and very helpful. I recommend this residency for any emerging artists. There was no fee for attending. I don’t believe there is a stipend but I do think they now offer housing which is a plus. Because I also had two jobs outside of the residency I did find it a challenge to balance all three. However, this residency is great if you need a studio space and want the opportunity to engage with a community. Everything is sort of on the artist to get the work going and make an impact but everyone at Sulfur is there to support you as need be! It’s a great step to help you learn how to work independently in a creative career.

Advice- the structure of the residency is self-based. If you want networking and artistic opportunities schedule them as part of your residency-as in talks or critiques.
