Hub Feenix

Meltola, Finland

The residency is a renovated sanatorium, deep in the forest, some 10 kilometres from the nearest town. The volunteers and the core group are wonderful people. Whether you are having a creative block, or want to explore new artistic directions, the Feenix is a great place to get away from everything and return to why you want to make art in the first place.

I felt the residence was very strong for graphic work or silkscreen. I enjoyed everyone I met and my time at AGA Lab. Getting the resources and funding for my projects would be the obstacles that if given the chance to return I would like to do better.

I produced a lot of work . Th facilities are quite run down . Very good for screen print . Poor technical assistance in etching . I found the money part of the residency pushy they doubled their rate a while I was there and tried to add extras to the bill when I came to pay at the end. I had to hire a drawer to store my paper I had to hire a box to put my materials in . It leaves a bad taste in the mouth at the end of the residency which is short sighted on their part . Reputation is everything . However I made a lot of work and really enjoyed that. 24 hr access is brilliant and the residency room is in the same building so it’s all on site.

DESIGNREGIO Kortrijk

We had the chance to benefit from writers and curators to write about our work and give us feedback We also had a great freedom both conceptually and financially while knowing the staff could answer our question at any time The location was great and we had two opportunities to show our work with great communication and nice encounters.

Benefits: Wonderful central location in Split; welcoming, erudite and helpful staff and community who comfortable and clean accommodation within the Culture Hub building, spacious light building next to shops Challenges: there was not a separate studio for painting as their programme is more conceptual/socially engaged but I managed fine with a little improvisation. Practical tips: Be clear and explicit about what you need to make your work. Costs v gains: Very reasonably priced and accessible. I got from the residency the seeds of a new body of work, fascinating historic materials to study, an expanded network. The curator gave me a recommendation to the British Croatian Society and i will be having a solo exhibition at the Croatian Embassy in London this November

Benefits: possibility to experiment with many printing techniques:P silk screen, riso, digital printing, toyobo. Also an inspiring environment to work with people using these techniques. Challenges: high material costs, not that much time slots to reserve printing machines because many people use them. Practical advice: get funding for your materials, have a clear plan.

Studios open 8h-20h, enabling the artists to work as much as they want. Technicians are friendly and helpful, really knowledgeable. Two external guests are invited (artist, curator..) to talk about you process which is a great opportunity.

The residence is an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the Alpine environment and the communities that inhabit it. The experience can produce collaborations, even later, with the curatorial team as well as activities related to the territory.

The AGA LAB residency, is really worth to attend. I did silk- screening during my residency. But you can also work with other graphic techniques. In a short time you develop new work. It’s inspiring.

Hub Feenix

Meltola, Finland

Hub Feenix was a perfect place for what I needed - a space to make and also a place to heal. The organizers and directors are genuine, caring people who clearly lead with love. I loved being there, and met many wonderful people; I felt supported and welcomed. The environment was beautiful, inside and out, and I honestly created some of the best artwork of my life at Hub Feenix!

Delfina Foundation

London, United Kingdom

A wonderful experience surrounded by amazing people. I am normal super cynical but this programme was so supportive and held so beautifully by an incredible team. It is definitely more of a opportunity to explore networks, test ideas and meet people than a studio residency and the fee is not enormous but it is just about enough to get by on. The location is so central and the house is full of joy.

Very kind and open-minded residency owners / curators and the ability to develop yourself freely, creating artworks without obligation for your background or specific media i.e. experimenting with materials / techniques and tools onsite.

The workshops has many techniques available. If the technicians are passionate, they will help you as much as they can. They work from 9-17h. Every week, there is meetings available to discuss progress. An exhibition is possible at the end of the residency for publicity which is a great chance. The advertisement depends of you. The residency is expensive, I would recommend looking into fundings.

Latitude Chicago

Chicago, Illinois, United States

Everyone at Latitude was so kind and helpful and truly was a huge positive change in my practice, how I make work, and my art career. I was granted a printing stipend, full access to facilities, and the community to develop my practice. They also provide you with the opportunity to meet with local curators, artists, and members of the community. Chicago has excellent public transportation, so it waseasy to get around. They don't provide housing, so as someone not from the Chicago area, that was a difficult hurdle to overcome. I was lucky in that I had a close friend who lived in Chicago already.

La Porte Peinte

Noyers sur Serein, France

Amazing residency in Noyers, a cute small village in France. The accommodation was great and the host went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. A great community with great french food. The residency included international artists with different styles which was great for my practice. We were provided with our own studios overlooking a beautiful quiet garden. It’s a great place to get away from the world and have the space to just create. Michele, was amazing and supportive and provided valuable advice. Definitely recommend!
